Angelina Jolie has spoken out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The actress, 46, took to Instagram to share that she is ‘praying for the people in Ukraine.’
Angelina, who is a renowned humanitarian as well as movie star, shared her heartfelt post after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin launched an attack on the country on Thursday.
As a Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – a position she was appointed in 2012 – she wrote: ‘Like many of you, I’m praying for the people in Ukraine. My focus along with my @refugees colleagues is that everything possible is done to ensure the protection and basic human rights of those displaced, and refugees in the region.’
Angelina continued: ‘We have already seen reports of casualties and people starting to flee their homes to seek safety.
‘It is too soon to know what will happen, but the significance of this moment – for the people of Ukraine, and for the international rule of law – cannot be overstated.’
She then directed her 12.3million followers to the UNHC’s full statement, stating they ‘remain firmly committed to supporting all affected populations in Ukraine and countries in the region.’
The UNHC said they are ‘gravely concerned about the fast-deteriorating situation and ongoing military action in Ukraine,’ adding that ‘the humanitarian consequences on civilian populations will be devastating.’
‘There are no winners in war, but countless lives will be torn apart,’ they added.
‘UNHCR is working with the authorities, UN and other partners in Ukraine and is ready to provide humanitarian assistance wherever necessary and possible. To that effect, security and access for humanitarian efforts must be guaranteed.
